Mikel Arteta described his Arsenal side’s late victory over Newcastle United as a deserved win that moves the Gunners within two points of title rivals Liverpool.
Reacting to the goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes he said: “Unbelievable feeling, that's what football is about and a team, when you get what you deserve right at the end, it's not a better feeling than that.”
Viktor Gyokeres thought he had earned a penalty for his side which Arteta again felt aggrieved not to be on the right end of the decision when it was reviewed by the VAR. The Spaniard highlighted what he felt was a break away from protocol from what he and his fellow managers had been told at the start of the season.

“Yeah, well, I watched it live and then I watched it on the screen and for me it was a penalty,” Arteta stated. “We were instructed very clearly again this season that unless it's a clear and obvious error, the referee is not going to intervene. It’s not. So that's my opinion.”
After a week where the Gunners’ boss faced backlash for his approach last weekend, it was put to Arteta whether his side’s performance and victory, which included three changes from the side that were frustrated by Pep Guardiola, had silenced his critics.
The Spaniard said: "Well, I don't know, I think they were there against Manchester City and Newcastle, two of the toughest opponents to play, the team was outstanding, that's my view on it. Very clear.”
Merino was a particular focus of attention, having started the 1-1 draw against City, but his impact in this game will have only delighted supporters, as well as perhaps handing them the perfect reminder of why Arteta has such faith in his compatriot.
