Online fraud cases are rapidly increasing, which is why Meta has added new safety features to Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger to protect users from fraud. These anti-scam features have been specifically targeted at older users. This initiative builds on the company's ongoing efforts to strengthen user safety on Meta platforms and promote digital literacy among older adults.
Users will be alerted.
On WhatsApp, users will now receive a warning if they attempt to share their screen with an unknown contact during a video call. Scammers often ask users to share their screen on WhatsApp and then trick them into sharing information like bank details and verification codes.
On Messenger, Meta has introduced AI-powered scam detection in chats. For example, users will be alerted when they receive a suspicious message from a new contact. Users can then select this information for AI review. If the system detects a potential scam, users will be informed about the scam and given the option to block or report the account.
Meta has rolled out Passkey login support on Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, allowing users to securely sign in using their fingerprint, face, or PIN. Users can also conduct a security checkup on Facebook and Instagram to review settings and choose stronger security options.
Alerts to the elderly through the Scam Se Bacho campaign
Meta is also strengthening its collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) through the Scam Se Bacho campaign. As part of this collaboration, the company is creating multilingual video content to help senior citizens identify and report online scams.
