Bihar Govt Launches Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana: Women Must Join Self-Help Groups to Get ₹10,000
Ahead of the state assembly elections, the Bihar government has announced a major welfare initiative for women – the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana. Under this scheme, one woman from every family in the state will be eligible to receive financial support ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹2 lakh to start her own business.
The scheme is being seen as a significant move by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to boost women’s participation in self-employment and small-scale entrepreneurship. The first installment of ₹10,000 will be released this month itself. However, there is a key condition: beneficiaries must be registered with a Jeevika Self-Help Group (SHG) before they can avail the benefit.
Why Joining Jeevika SHG Is MandatoryThe state government has made it clear that without joining a Jeevika SHG, women cannot claim the initial ₹10,000 assistance. Registration with these groups will ensure accountability, collective support, and proper monitoring of the scheme.
To join a Jeevika SHG, interested women must submit an application form and a self-declaration form to their respective Gram Sangathan (village organization). The local body will verify eligibility based on certain conditions and either approve or reject the application with remarks.
The forms require details such as name, father’s name, family head’s name, village, district, caste category, and other personal information. Only after approval will the woman become a member of the SHG, making her eligible for the financial assistance.
Three Eligibility ConditionsTo apply under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, applicants must fulfill these three conditions:
The woman must be aged between 18 and 60 years.
Neither the applicant nor her husband should fall under the income tax-paying category.
Neither the applicant nor her husband should hold a government job (permanent or contractual).
These conditions are aimed at ensuring that the scheme benefits economically weaker women who genuinely need support to start their livelihoods.
Types of Work Covered Under the SchemeThe Bihar government has identified 18 types of work eligible for financial support under this scheme. These include small-scale businesses such as fruit and vegetable shops, grocery outlets, tailoring units, and other local trade activities. The full list of approved trades can be checked on the official scheme website.
How the Funding Will WorkUnder the scheme, women will first receive ₹10,000 as the initial installment to set up their businesses. After six months, authorities will review the progress of the business. If found satisfactory, the government will provide an additional loan of up to ₹2 lakh to expand the business. This loan will also carry a government subsidy, making repayment easier.
The phased structure of funding ensures that beneficiaries use the initial support effectively and are motivated to grow their enterprises sustainably.
A Boost for Women Empowerment in BiharThe Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana is not just about providing money – it is also about economic empowerment, self-reliance, and social inclusion. By linking financial support with SHG membership, the scheme encourages collective entrepreneurship and community support systems.
Experts believe that this initiative could significantly improve women’s participation in Bihar’s rural economy, reduce dependency on male family members, and create more avenues for household income generation.
