Union Ministers engage key leaders ahead of Justice Varma's impeachment motion

New Delhi: The government plans to reach out to the opposition to build consensus on initiating a motion to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma during the upcoming monsoon session, setting the process in motion. A top government official said a motion for impeachment has to be introduced in the upcoming Parliament session.

The government hopes build consensus and get the opposition MPs to sign the notice to start the motion, sources said.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to coordinate with opposition parties on this.

Sources also said that the formation of another inquiry committee by the presiding officer of the Parliament may be skipped.


Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a series of meetings. He met Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and later, along with Union Minister JP Nadda, met Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar. Nadda is the leader of the house in Rajya Sabha.

On May 28, ET reported that the impeachment motion could be introduced in Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session.
