Mumbai: As new COVID-19 cases see an uptick across Asia, including in India, health authorities are urging people to stay vigilant and follow essential precautions, especially with the monsoon season approaching, which can further strain public health systems.
Maharashtra sees a COVID-19 spike from 12 to 56 cases in a week. As of Monday, India has 257 active cases. Kerala tops the list with 95 cases and one death, followed by Maharashtra with the second-highest count. Authorities urge caution as numbers gradually rise.
Recently, two COVID-related deaths were reported at Mumbai's King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. According to doctors, both individuals had underlying health conditions. One was a 14-year-old with kidney failure due to nephrotic syndrome, and the other was a 54-year-old undergoing cancer treatment. Both cases highlight the increased risk COVID-19 poses to people with comorbidities.
Here are some simple but effective COVID-19 precautions every Mumbaikar should follow:
Key COVID-19 Safety Tips
Get Vaccinated: Ensure you're up to date with all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses. Follow local guidelines for booster shots.
Maintain Physical Distance: Keep at least 1 metre of distance from others, especially in crowded areas, even if they appear healthy.
Wear a Properly Fitted Mask: Use a well-fitting mask when physical distancing isn’t possible, especially in closed or poorly ventilated places. Avoid masks with valves.
Hand Hygiene is Crucial:
Sanitisation: Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Always clean your hands before putting on or taking off your mask.
Cough/Sneeze Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Dispose of tissues immediately and sanitise your hands.
Isolate if Symptomatic: If you show symptoms or test positive for COVID-19, self-isolate and seek medical advice.
Do’s and Don’ts
Ensure your mask covers your nose, mouth, and chin completely.
Store reusable masks in a clean plastic bag when not in use.
Wash cloth masks daily or discard disposable ones after use.
Avoid touching the front of your mask while wearing or removing it.
As COVID-19 cases are reported in the city, particularly in densely populated cities like Mumbai, staying vigilant can help protect yourself and those around you. With the monsoon season ahead likely to spread viral illnesses, now is the time to reinforce basic hygiene and health practices. For Mumbaikars, who are no strangers to crowded trains, bustling markets, and dense neighbourhoods, the risks can be higher.
