Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has accelerated work on the quadrupling of the Virar–Dahanu Road section under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project Phase-3 (MUTP-3).
"This key infrastructure initiative aims to significantly enhance suburban rail capacity and reduce congestion on the busy Western suburban corridor. The project has reached 41% physical progress and is being implemented at a sanctioned cost of ₹3,578 crore. Currently, the Virar–Dahanu section operates with just two lines. Upon completion, the quadrupling will double the operational capacity of this critical stretch," said an official.
Key project milestones have been crossed, including full approval of all 31 technical drawings, General Arrangement Drawings (GADs) for bridges, and nine Engineering Scale Plans (ESPs). Land acquisition is complete across all categories — 29.17 hectares of private land, 10.26 hectares of government land, and 3.77 hectares of forest land have all been secured, along with both Stage I and II forest clearances. The High Court of Bombay has given its nod for mangrove cutting, and MRVC has also taken possession of 12.8 hectares of land from NPCIL in Boisar, where work is already underway.
According to sources, civil and structural works are progressing rapidly. Over 5.32 lakh cubic meters of earthwork has been completed, with around 85% of the total earthwork now done. Major progress has been made on key bridge structures, including Bridge No. 92, where 576 piles and 87 deck slabs have been completed, while foundational work is in progress at Bridge No. 93. The embankment has been laid over a 13-kilometre stretch, and the foundation of the Road Over Bridge (ROB) at LC 55A has been completed, with the superstructure work currently ongoing.
"Station redevelopment and residential quarters across the corridor are also advancing steadily. At Virar and Vaitarna, booking offices, RPF/GRP posts, Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) buildings, and other key facilities are already in place, with construction of deck-over platforms and new structures in progress. Along the Vaitarna to Dahanu Road stretch, several station structures are witnessing notable development," said an official.
"At Saphale, 44 staff quarters, relay huts, Foot Over Bridge (FOB) foundations, and Cover Over Platform (COP) works are underway. Kelve Road has seen steady progress on the station building, 20 staff quarters, and FOB extensions. Palghar’s redevelopment includes construction of 76 quarters and essential railway infrastructure such as RRI and permanent way (P-way) buildings. Umroli is nearing completion, with 98% of the station building finished and bridge and FOB works ongoing. At Boisar, the station building is 95% done, and work on the new goods depot is in full swing. Vangaon has completed 96% of its station building, with work on staff quarters and water tanks in progress, while at Dahanu Road, quarters, an SSE (Senior Section Engineer) office, RRI cabins, and a control tower are under construction," the official further added.

The corporation is confident that the project will transform the daily commuting experience for lakhs of passengers by enabling faster, more reliable, and higher-capacity rail services in the extended Western suburban network.
“The quadrupling of the Virar–Dahanu Road section is a critical component of our long-term vision to enhance suburban rail connectivity in Mumbai’s extended metropolitan region. Despite the complex land and forest clearance processes, the project is progressing steadily.
