On May 14, 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI), succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna following his retirement. The oath was administered by President Draupadi Murmu in a formal ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Gavai, who took the oath in Hindi, will serve as CJI for the next six months before his retirement in November 2025.

Justice Gavai’s Legal Journey

• Appointment to the Supreme Court: Justice Gavai became a judge of the Supreme Court in May 2019, having previously served as a judge at the Bombay High Court.

He played a crucial role in the December 2023 verdict that upheld the repeal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. He also contributed to landmark decisions, such as the cancellation of the electoral bond scheme and the 2016 demonetization case.

Tenure and Retirement

Justice Gavai’s tenure as Chief Justice will last for six months, as he will retire at the age of 65 in November 2025. His leadership is expected to influence several significant rulings in the final months of his tenure.

His recommendation for the CJI position was made by Justice Khanna on April 16, 2025, in line with the constitutional procedures.
