A large part of the internet between Europe and Asia is connected to these cables. This is the reason why 17% of global internet traffic has been disrupted at this time.
The damaged cables include key systems such as SEACOM/TGN-EA, AAE-1 and EIG, disrupting a large part of the data flow between continents.
Microsoft's Azure has been greatly affected by the internet cable breakage. Regarding this, Microsoft said that Azure users may face problems in traffic, especially between Asia and Europe. According to the company, it may take time to repair these cables, so they are currently managing by sending data through other routes. They are constantly trying to reduce the impact of this problem on users.
What is the reason for the cable breaking?
However, officials are yet to ascertain how the cables were cut. Previous incidents in the Red Sea have often been attributed to anchors dropped by commercial vessels, but in some cases deliberate sabotage is also suspected. Due to the ongoing dispute in the region, experts suspect that critical digital infrastructure may be deliberately targeted, affecting global connectivity.
Along with this, there is also concern that Yemen's Houthi rebels can damage internet cables in the Red Sea. They say that this step may have been taken to put pressure on Israel to end the Gaza war. However, the Houthi rebels have not said anything about this.
Net of India-Pak also became slow
Netblocks, a company which keeps an eye on internet access, said that due to fault in many cables laid under the Red Sea, internet connection has become slow in many countries. This includes India and Pakistan as well. The company said that fault in SMW4 and IMEWE cable system near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia is the reason for this.
