India’s veteran fast bowler Mohammad Shami has once again proven why he’s considered one of the best pacers in the country. Despite ongoing discussions about his fitness and absence from Team India for the past seven months, Shami showcased his brilliance while playing for Bengal in the opening round of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy, taking seven wickets in the match.
Shami shines with 7 wickets
In Bengal’s match against Uttarakhand, Shami bowled with trademark precision and pace. In the first innings, he delivered 14.5 overs, conceding just 37 runs and picking up 3 wickets, all of which came within four balls of his 15th over — a display of pure skill and control.
In the second innings, Shami continued his domination, bowling 24.4 overs, giving away only 38 runs, and dismissing four more batsmen. This took his total tally to seven wickets in the match. Impressively, he bowled close to 40 overs in total, which effectively silenced doubts over his fitness. He ended up as Bengal’s highest wicket-taker in the game, reaffirming his readiness for a national comeback.
Fitness debate continues
The fitness debate around Shami gained momentum after chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated during India’s squad announcement for the Australia tour that he had “no update” on Shami’s fitness. In response, before taking the field for Bengal, Shami remarked,
"If fitness is an issue, then I shouldn’t be playing for Bengal. I’ve played the Champions Trophy 2025, IPL 2025, and the Duleep Trophy — I’m in good touch. If I can play four-day cricket, I can also play 50-over cricket."
Agarkar later addressed Shami’s comments, acknowledging his contribution to Indian cricket but emphasizing that fitness concerns were genuine. He said,
"Shami has been a fantastic player for India. If he’s fit and bowling well, of course we’ll consider him. But in the last few months, he hasn’t been fully fit. We even wanted to take him to Australia earlier, but he wasn’t ready. If he maintains fitness, things can change soon."
