An expert's method for making the best jacket potatoes is super simple and straightforward, and it gives the "best" results. Jacket potatoes have a special place in the hearts of many British households. Whether it's for lunch or dinner, a jacket potato is a filling favourite that can be made as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be. Depending on what you top it with, a jacket potato can be a real showstopping dish.
There are several ways you can make this British classic. Many people opt for the oven method, but there is another appliance you can use that gives great results. That is the mighty air fryer, which has exploded in popularity in the UK over recent years. Air fryers have revolutionised the way many households make meals, from quick lunchtime bites to whole dinners. Favourites to make in an air fryer include roast potatoes, homemade pizzas and even whole cakes. And jacket potatoes are another one that you can pop into these handy devices to get great results.
One chef and recipe developer, Marjorie, shared her method and said that it gives her the "best" results. She revealed: "These air fryer baked potatoes have that crispy skin and tender, fluffy inside, and they are the best baked potatoes."
To make her jacket potatoes, she uses russet potatoes, oil, garlic powder, salt, and her toppings of choice. Some of her go-to toppings are sour cream, butter, and cheddar cheese.
To start, she washes her potatoes and pats them dry. Then, she places them in the air fryer basket and gives them a light coat of cooking spray. She says that avocado oil works great. After that, she sprinkles them "generously" with sea salt and garlic powder.
Once she has used her hands to make sure each potato is coated nicely with these seasonings, she puts the air fryer on at around 200C. The potatoes should take around 40 minutes to cook.
At the 25-minute mark, she uses some tongs to flip them around to make sure they cook evenly. While the method is pretty foolproof, she does have a few tips to consider.
Firstly, she says it's important not to crowd the potatoes in the air fryer. Additionally, you should pierce them with a fork to help them cook better in the middle. She also urged home cooks to adjust cooking size depending on the soze of the potatoes.
