Actress Spreha Chatterjee, who plays the role of Mahi in Rajan Shahi's Anupamaa, says that all TV shows are made keeping the audience in mind. She adds that people are able to relate to the stories they see on TV, which is what draws them to the medium. “TV shows have a deeply rooted connection with the audience’s daily life. It is an integral part of their daily comfort routine and cannot be pulled apart. The characters become their own family, their stories become their own stories and they tend to follow and grow with their experiences. Even today in many homes, their favorite serial time is their family time,” she says.

She adds, “This is so encouraging to see how TV is evolving to showcase the issues that society is facing today. Topics are being picked which really resonates with people. Subjects of the stories have extended to some real issues like Gender equality, mental health, women empowerment etc. It is very satisfying for the actors also to be part of such creative projects that not only entertain but also add value to the society.”

Talking about content changing as per the audience's liking, she says, “We make everything for the audience and they are the essence of our work. So, our content has to meet up with their changing interests and likings to keep things interesting for both of us. World is changing at a fast pace and so is the taste and likings of the audience. I think it is extremely important to bring in the content and stories that are based on real contemporary themes, have stronger characters, creative ways of telling a story, and are relatable with the changing of the time and demand of the audience.”

Sharing her own journey, she says, “As an actor I have grown with every passing day on the set. I have learnt a lot from every director, every co-actor that I have worked with. This journey of evolving myself as an actor was a beautiful learning experience. But I believe learning should never stop. So for me there is still a lot to learn and a long way to go. And with the love and support of my mentors ,family, friends, and audience, I will keep learning and growing.”

She adds, “According to me, establishing a strong personal and emotional connection with the audience is the USP of a TV actor. TV actors have this advantage of appearing every day and thus become part of people’s everyday routine life. People start seeing a kind of parallelism between their own lives and the character’s journey, struggles, achievements and growth. Such familiarity, trust and association is highly sustainable and extremely powerful.”

Meanwhile, she says that she loves working on TV. “The nature of films and OTT is very competitive, unpredictable and highly risky in terms of safety, security and finances. Whereas TV provides actors with consistent work and steady income. In the Indian entertainment world, daily soaps run for years and have long-term value, security and recognition for the actors. OTT and films may offer you chances of playing various creative roles and characters but if you talk about safety; then TV provides you the most sustainable and secure platform.”
