SRINAGAR: Union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Monday said tourism in Kashmir, which was severely impacted by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack , was now showing signs of revival following various initiatives taken by the Centre and the J&K govt.
“The efforts by J&K govt, along with central govt’s initiatives like sending delegations, organising conferences etc., have helped in rebuilding confidence,” Shekhawat said. “These efforts will bear fruit and in the coming days, tourism in Kashmir will be back in full swing.”
The minister mentioned that he had visited Kashmir last month and had sent out a message that the Valley was safe. “What happened is unfortunate, but we must move forward,” he added.
Shekhawat was talking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day National Tourism Secretaries’ Conference, organised by his ministry in Srinagar.
“India has immense tourism potential, and it is growing. We aim to develop 50 iconic global standard destinations that offer world-class facilities to every tourist,” the Union minister said. “Tourism secretaries have been asked to come up with innovative ideas to enhance the overall experience of tourists visiting the country,” he added.
Meanwhile, J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on Monday visited Nunwan Base camp at Pahalgam and reviewed the arrangements in place for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The LG interacted with the pilgrims, service providers and sanitation workers, and took stock of the facilities for the devotees.
During his visit, Sinha chaired a meeting with the administrative and security officials and discussed measures taken for a safe and hassle-free yatra. He commended the significant contribution of all stakeholders in the smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage.
Sinha was accompanied by Shri AmarnathJi Shrine Board CEO Mandeep K. Bhandari, IGP (Kashmir) V K Birdi and other senior officers of district administration, police, security forces and SASB.
