A 22-year-old man from Utah has been arrested in connection with the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Authorities have identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson.
According to the law enforcement official, the father of Robinson recognised his son from publicly released photos. He urged his son to surrender and enlisted the help of a youth pastor. The pastor then contacted the US Marshals, who subsequently apprehended the suspect.
How Tyler Robinson was caught
Tyler Robinson’s roommate showed investigators messages from Discord, a group chat app, where Robinson discussed retrieving a rifle, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox.
At a news briefing, Cox explained that the roommate opened Discord and “allowed investigators to take photos of the screen as each message was shown by Robinson’s mate.”
“The content of these included messages affiliated with the contact Tyler, stating a need to retrieve a rifle from a drop point, leaving the rifle in a bush, messages related to visually watching the area where a rifle was left, and a message referring to having left the rifle wrapped in a towel,” Cox detailed.
President Donald Trump confirmed the arrest during a live Fox News interview on Friday, declaring, “With a high degree of certainty, we have him.” He said the suspect was recognised by someone close to him and subsequently turned in to authorities. Trump added, “He wanted to help young people, and he didn’t deserve this. He was really a good person.”
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA , was fatally shot on Wednesday while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University. Witnesses said the gunman fired a single shot from a rooftop before fleeing into nearby woods. Investigators later recovered a bolt-action rifle near the scene.
The attack, captured on video and widely shared online, showed Kirk collapsing as panicked spectators fled. Federal and state officials said more than 7,000 tips were received before Robinson was taken into custody. A news conference on the case is expected later today in Utah.
